Du Huan, a Song dynasty loyalist, lives in a fishing village by the lake under the guise of a fisherman. His son Guochong and his wife Qianniang are deeply in love. One day, while they go out to fish, they rescue Sun Jia's son and his wife Zhang Shunhua from capture by the Yuan army. However, General Zhao Bao is attracted to Shunhua's beauty and wants her as his concubine. Du Huan refuses, leading Zhao Bao to anger him into imprisonment.
Zhao Bao orders Guochong to exchange one of his daughters for his father's freedom. While imprisoned, Du Huan remains defiant but ultimately escapes with the help of neighbor girl Xiangjuan who brings him food daily.
Guochong learns about this and begs for mercy but is forced to become an official under the Yuan regime instead. Du Huan mourns over losing honor and integrity before being rescued by Xiangjuan again with funds raised from her family.
Meanwhile, Qianniang marries into the Yuan camp under pressure from Guochong but plots revenge against those responsible for their suffering. She eventually sacrifices herself in an attempt on General Gajia's life only to be discovered by him who then has Guochong flogged brutally.
Xiangjuan seeks revenge as well until she discovers that Sun Jia has returned with troops seeking vengeance against those who wronged them all these years ago. As it turns out that both Sun Jia and Du Huan were working together at South Song court when he was captured once more during another battle between North & South Song armies
Sun Jia captures Gajia intending on killing him after realizing he had killed Xiangjuan (the girl who loved Du Han) - she had been secretly sent by Sun Jia as bait; thus ensuring justice will prevail - The story ends tragically with both families' sons dead
This tragic tale concludes as "The Fisherman’s Hero" stone monument stands proudly in front of their humble home where it reads: "Fisherman’s Hero"
