毛文简为了探明未婚妻是否会回心转意，故伪装成学者回到张家。在那里，他见到了落魄归来的自己，并得知素花已经改变了想法，不再愿意嫁给他。这时，素梅 sister, who had been watching from the side, repeatedly urged her sister to reconsider. Their father, moved by their words, suddenly had a change of heart and decided that one of his daughters should marry in place of the other.

In a fit of anger, Susan scolded her sister for being so petty and only caring about wealth. But Susan was not greedy; she valued integrity and honor above all else. She made up her mind to marry without hesitation.

The story ends with Susan dressed in her wedding finery, leaving home on horseback while Susan weeps on the ground, filled with regret for herself.

This classic play was first performed by Shanghai's Luwan Opera Troupe in 1989, starring Xiao Mei-qing as Susan and Zhang Su-chen as Susan's mother. The performance was led by Juu Jiuling as Mao Wenzhun.
